Befitting a title-deciding game, the Glens Falls Indians and Gloversville Huskies battled down to the final seconds Friday, with the host Indians taking a 32-30 victory to capture the Class A, Division II title.
Denny Wilhelm scored with 44 seconds remaining in the contest, then tossed a pass to Jimmer Fredette for the winning conversion for Glens Falls.
The key play, though, came one play earlier when Wilhelm hit Alec Conover with a pass at the 1 yard line. Conover out-jumped a much smaller defender to get the ball. 'I told Denny to believe in me (on the play),' Conover said. It was his first game back following a two-game suspension.
Those two combined on four passes for 71 yards and one touchdown as Gloversville paid close attention to big-play threat Jimmer Fredette, who caught five passes for just 50 yards.
'After last week, we knew they'd be all over Jimmer,' Glens Falls coach Pat Lilac said. 'They had two people on Jimmer and Alec is a darn good player.'
Despite inclement weather, both teams played relatively clean football and both were able to drive for scores. Gloversville went up 6-0 in the first quarter as Tom Montano ran in from two yards. Glens Falls went ahead 8-6 as David White scampered 37 yards and then ran in the conversion.
The Huskies got a big play to open the second quarter with Eddie Murray blocking a punt, which Montano fell on in the end zone for a 12-6 lead. A pivotal play in the game followed as Glens Falls punted on its next possession.
Gloversville played for a fake punt, but the ball skidded on the wet grass, coming to a stop just inches from the goal line. On the first play, Jeff Shufelt broke through and dropped Mike Emrick in the end zone for a safety. 'We had mistakes on the blocking,' Gloversville coach Tom Ciaccio said.
Lilac added the Indians used their goal line defense on the play and were able to break through for the safety. Conover closed the first half scoring on a 14-yard pass from Wilhelm and White again ran in the conversion for an 18-12 halftime lead,
The Huskies evened the score after three quarters as Emrick ran 13 yards.
The teams each scored twice in the final 12 minutes, two Wilhelm runs for Glens Falls, an Adrian Barnhill 2-yard run and 26-yard pass from Kevin Kucel to Eddie Murray for Gloversville.
'We couldn't have written this any better,' Lilac said of the outcome. 'We knew we had to score on them to win and we were able to drive on them in the worst conditions I've seen at East Field.'
Ciaccio said, 'They are a very good football team. We made some mistakes, but I congratulate Glens Falls.' He added that starting quarterback Kris Barone suffered a head injury on a third-quarter scramble, but it was not known how serious the injury was.
