Highlights
Glens Falls' Jimmer Fredette has a knack for scoring on big plays and Friday he had three of them to lead the Indians over Amsterdam, 33-27, in Class A football action.
Fredette started early, taking the opening kickoff 86 yards to put Glens Falls up 6-0. He added 50- and 69-yard scoring passing from Denny Wilhelm, finishing with 8 catches for 175 yards.
Played in a steady drizzle, both teams seemed to score at will in the opening 24 minutes. Amsterdam's Bryan Davey scored on a 13-yard run to make it 6-6 after one quarter.
The teams took turns scoring in the second quarter. Matt Salem ran in from 1 yard out for Glens Falls, Vinny Vandetta broke two tackles on a 72-yard scoring pass from T.J. Czeski, Fredette caught his 5-yard pass, Tom McDemott ran 62 yards for the Rams and Fredette finished off the half with his 69-yard pass play.
Up 27-20 to start the second half, the Indians could not stop Amsterdam's opening drive and McDermott ran the final two yards to make it a 27-27 score. Glens Falls answered on its next drive with Salem running the final three yards.
Then the rain came down harder and the defenses clamped down.
While scoring on big plays is routine for the Indians, Glens Falls coach Pat Lilac said he was happy his team was able to score on a couple of long drives without a big play. He added, 'The big drive of the game we didn't score on. After they punted and we got the ball on the 20, we had a nice long drive.'
The Indians took almost seven minutes off the clock in the final quarter on the drive, which ended with an interception at the Amsterdam 14.
Amsterdam coach Pat Liverio was happy with his team's offense, but not with the defense. 'Defensively we stink,' he said. 'I congratulate Pat (Lilac). His kids played well. If a big play had to be made, they made it and we didn't.'
Wilhelm led the Glens Falls offense with 94 rushing yards and 198 passing yards and the two touchdowns. T.J. Czeski threw for 126 yards and one touchdown to pace Amsterdam, and Tom McDermott ran for 90 and two scores.
